Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The Food Safety Lab housed in the Food Science and Nutrition Department is seeking a postdoctoral associate to lead studies on the investigation of Listeria monocytogenes in produce. Specifically, the postdoc will be expected to execute multiple challenge studies in various produce products, validate a surrogate, and conduct distribution simulation studies and microbiome analysis. The postdoc will lead several peer-reviewed publications and present results at scientific meetings.

This position is exempt status and subject to continued funding.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in food science, food microbiology, or a related field

Excellent quantitative, analytical, and data management skills

Excellent scientific writing skills

Strong oral presentation skills

Strong computer skills, including data management and data analysis, as well as statistics

Excellent organizational skills

Ability to work with foodborne pathogens including L. monocytogenes

Ability to work independently and self-motivated

Ability to prioritize, plan, organize, and meet time lines

Ability to lead others in managing tasks; train and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with others

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

Desire to learn new skills and work in teams including students, researchers, and faculty

A background check is required for all regular, benefited positions

The following experience is required:

o Experience working with foodborne pathogens
o Experience conducting challenge studies
o Experience sampling food products and enumerating for bacteria

Preferred Qualifications

Experience conducting microbiome studies

Experience working with people of different backgrounds, philosophies, and objectives

Publication record in the permanent and/or peer reviewed scientific literature

Physical Demands

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone

Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and calculator

Seeing to read a variety of materials

Sitting or standing for extended period of time

Physical agility to lift 20 pounds to shoulder height

Physical agility to lift, carry, push, or pull objects

Commuting on an as needed basis to outside meetings and training locations

Typical Essential Functions

Manage and coordinate the day-to-day operation of the Food Safety Lab

Coordinate the execution of L. monocytogenes challenge studies and surrogate validation

Coordinate the execution of produce distribution simulation studies

Collect and analyze microbiome data

Lead several peer-reviewed publications that result from this research

Present results at scientific conferences

Train and mentor students as it relates to project and laboratory safety

Directly supervise assigned employees, including graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Corporation’s policies and applicable laws and regulations

Direct and monitor employees to ensure that they remain in compliance with policies and procedures

Subordinates may include: Graduate Student Employees and Undergraduate Student Employees
